Smyrna High School Class of 2026 Celebrates a Night of Achievement and Tradition
The Class of 2026 from Smyrna High School marked a major milestone Saturday evening during commencement exercises held at Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
Family members, friends, faculty, and community supporters filled the arena as graduates walked into the ceremony to the traditional strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” performed by the Smyrna High School Band under the direction of Mr. Ben Reagh. The ceremony reflected both the pride of the community and the hard work of students who reached this important chapter in life.
The evening began with the Presentation of Colors by the Smyrna High JROTC Battalion Color Guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. The patriotic opening set a respectful and inspiring tone for the celebration.
Principal Dr. Sherri Southerland welcomed attendees and praised the graduating class for its perseverance, leadership, and accomplishments throughout the school year. Student leaders also addressed the audience, including Valedictorians Stevie Hens and David Jonson, along with Salutatorian Ryan Dadney. Their speeches reflected on friendships, challenges, academic success, and the bright futures awaiting the graduates.

This class represents the future of our community, and I have no doubt they will do great things wherever life takes them. Graduates proudly wore a variety of honor cords and stoles representing excellence and involvement in numerous programs. Purple and gold cords identified valedictorians, while purple cords recognized the salutatorian. Other distinctions included honors for National Honor Society, Student Council, Youth in Government, Future Farmers of America, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, JROTC, Work Ethic Distinction, Clinicals, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Assistant Principal Mrs. Nicole Takayama presented the Salutatorian and Valedictorian Awards, while Assistant Principal Mr. Billy Harris recognized students for outstanding achievements earned in academics, leadership, career preparation, agriculture, music, government, and service organizations.
Diplomas were presented by Dr. Southerland alongside assistant principals Ms. Ericke Coronado, Mr. Kirk Embry, Mr. Billy Harris, Mr. Steven Lay, and Mrs. Nicole Takayama as graduates crossed the stage to cheers and applause from loved ones.
The ceremony concluded with the singing of the alma mater, bringing together students, faculty, and families in one final moment of unity before the graduates officially stepped into a new season of life.
For the Smyrna High School Class of 2026, commencement was more than a graduation ceremony — it was a celebration of determination, growth, community, and the promise of future success.
