God Speaks to His People: Beyond Distance—Why Perspective Without Action Falls Short

Bette Midler’s song “From a Distance” offers a reminder that perspective matters. When we step back from our conflicts, divisions, and daily frustrations, we can begin to see humanity as more connected than separated. Beneath our differences, we share many of the same hopes, fears, and needs.

But there is an important difference between seeing the world from a distance and responding to its suffering up close.

The song invites reflection on peace and unity. The story of Moses reminds us that God does more than observe humanity. He sees suffering, calls people by name, and invites ordinary individuals to become part of His work.

In Exodus 3, Moses is tending sheep in the wilderness when he encounters a bush that burns without being consumed. What begins as an unusual sight becomes a life-changing conversation. God calls Moses, reveals His holiness, promises His presence, and sends him to lead Israel out of bondage.

Moses does not feel qualified. He asks, “Who am I?”

God’s answer is not a list of Moses’ accomplishments. It is a promise: “I will be with you.”

Together, these themes challenge us to broaden our perspective without becoming distant from the people who need us.

God Can Speak in Ordinary Places

Moses encountered God while caring for his father-in-law’s sheep. He was not in a palace or standing before an audience. He was doing an ordinary job in an isolated place.

This reminds us not to overlook the spiritual significance of everyday life. God can meet us at home, at work, during a quiet walk, or in the middle of a difficult season.

Sometimes we wait for an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference when the opportunity is already in front of us: a struggling neighbor, a discouraged coworker, a child who needs encouragement, or someone who simply needs to be heard.

The wilderness may feel empty, but it is not beyond God’s presence.

We Must Be Willing to Stop and Listen

Moses noticed the burning bush and turned aside to look. Rather than continuing with his routine, he paid attention.

That willingness to pause matters.

Our lives are filled with noise—headlines, responsibilities, disagreements, and endless distractions. We can become so focused on what demands our attention that we miss what deserves it.

“From a Distance” encourages us to step back and see a larger picture. Moses’ encounter encourages us to stop long enough to notice what is directly before us.

Both perspectives are valuable. We need enough distance to see beyond our frustrations and enough closeness to recognize another person’s pain.

Prayer, Scripture, reflection, and wise counsel can help us listen more carefully and respond more thoughtfully.

God’s Presence Calls for Humility

God instructed Moses to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. Moses hid his face in reverence.

The encounter reminds us that God is loving and personal, but also holy. We approach Him honestly, yet humbly, recognizing that our understanding is limited.

That humility should influence how we treat others.

We do not know every burden someone carries. We have not lived every experience that shaped their thinking. Before dismissing someone because of politics, background, or personal differences, we can pause and remember that they, too, deserve dignity.

Humility does not require abandoning our convictions. It requires expressing them without abandoning compassion.

God Knows Us Personally

From the bush, God called, “Moses! Moses!”

Moses was not anonymous to God. His history, fears, failures, and uncertainty were known.

Later, when Moses and Aaron shared God’s message with the Israelites, the people believed and worshiped because they understood that God had seen their suffering and was concerned about them.

Here is a powerful contrast with the idea of distance: God’s concern is personal.

Suffering can appear abstract when viewed from afar. Up close, it has a name, a face, and a family. Loneliness is not merely a social problem; it is a person waiting for someone to call. A child’s struggle is not simply a statistic; it is a life needing care.

If we want to reflect God’s compassion, we must be willing to see people—not just problems.

God’s Calling Is Greater Than Our Confidence

Moses questioned whether he could stand before Pharaoh and lead Israel. Many of us recognize that feeling.

Who am I to lead? Who am I to speak? What difference could I possibly make?

God did not tell Moses to rely on confidence alone. He promised to be with him.

An often-shared Christian saying expresses this encouragement: “God does not call the qualified. He qualifies those He calls.” While not a direct Bible quotation, it captures the reminder that feelings of inadequacy need not prevent obedience.

We do not have to possess every answer before taking a faithful step. We can mentor a young person, encourage a struggling family, visit someone who is lonely, or help reconcile a disagreement.

God’s call is not an invitation to self-importance. It is an invitation to trust Him and serve.

Our Confidence Rests in Who God Is

When Moses asked God’s name, the Lord answered, “I AM WHO I AM.”

The mission would rest on God’s identity, not Moses’ personality. The God who called him was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the One whose faithfulness extended across generations.

That truth offers stability when circumstances feel uncertain.

We cannot predict every outcome or control every event. But faith calls us to ground our actions in God’s character rather than our changing emotions.

Knowing whom we trust helps us take the next step, even when we cannot see the entire path.

Peace Must Become Something We Practice

One lesson we can draw from “From a Distance” is that our differences do not erase our shared humanity. Many conflicts look different when viewed beyond the heat of the moment.

Yet perspective alone is not enough. A peaceful-looking world from afar can still contain deep suffering up close.

In Exodus, God did not merely tell Moses to notice Israel’s suffering. He sent him to respond.

Likewise, we should not merely admire peace. We should practice it within our families, churches, schools, and communities.

Jesus taught in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

Peacemaking is active. It means listening before reacting, speaking truth with love, addressing injustice, extending forgiveness, and refusing to treat another person as less than human.

It does not mean ignoring wrongdoing. It means pursuing what is right without surrendering compassion.

From Listening to Living

In Exodus 4, Moses and Aaron brought God’s message to the people. When the Israelites recognized that God had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.

The message was more than information. It was an assurance that they had not been forgotten.

Our words and actions can help communicate that same care to people around us. Faith becomes visible when we listen patiently, serve faithfully, and point beyond ourselves toward God.

The central message of Moses’ calling is not, “You are strong enough.” It is, “God is with you.”

“From a Distance” invites us to see the bigger picture. Exodus invites us to take the next step—to listen, draw near, and respond.

We may not encounter a burning bush, but we encounter opportunities every day to show compassion, build understanding, and serve someone in need.

We should not merely hope for a better world from a distance. With God’s help, we can begin making a difference right where we stand.
