State officials mourning East TN Mayor Joe Brooks killed in motorcycle crash

State and local leaders are mourning the sudden passing of Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks, who died Friday night following a motorcycle accident in Union County.

According to preliminary reports from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the 56-year-old mayor was traveling along State Route 33 around 11:00 p.m. when his motorcycle left the roadway while navigating a curve and struck a guardrail. Officials noted he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Mayor Brooks, a proud Navy veteran, had served as county mayor since August 2018 and was currently seeking re-election. Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues and state officials highlighting his dedication to the community and his advocacy for crime victims—including his instrumental work toward opening a local Family Justice Center and supporting regional victim advocacy programs.
