Senator Dawn White Pays Tribute to Elizabeth McPhee in Moving MTSU Commencement Speech

Middle Tennessee State University, MTSU, will celebrate its Spring 2026 Commencement on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, at the Murphy Center. Three ceremonies are planned to honor more than 2,500 graduates crossing the stage to mark this milestone in their lives.
Congratulations to Dawn White on being selected as the commencement address speaker for MTSU’s Friday graduation ceremonies. It is an honor well deserved, and the Class of 2026 is fortunate to have her voice guiding them into the next chapter.
In a moment that touched the hearts of everyone in attendance, Dawn took time to honor the memory of Elizabeth McPhee, the late wife of Dr. McPhee, who passed away earlier this year. It was a gracious and meaningful tribute — a reminder that even in seasons of celebration, we carry with us those we have loved and lost.

From growing up in Eagleville and attending Rutherford County Schools to earning three degrees from MTSU, Senator White’s story is one of hard work, service, faith, and leadership. As a former educator at Black Fox Elementary, successful entrepreneur, community volunteer, former state representative, and now chairman of the Senate Education Committee, she has dedicated her life to improving opportunities for Tennessee students and families.

Dawn White represents the very best of Rutherford County — a leader who understands education, business, and public service. Her journey from the classroom to the Tennessee Senate is an inspiration to graduates preparing to begin the next chapter of their lives.
Congratulations Senator White and congratulations to all the MTSU graduates! Your future is bright, and Tennessee is proud of you.
