I was curious about which classic cars are the most dependable. I know what you’re thinking: “I had that car in high school,” “My friend Jimmy drove that same Jeep,” or “Christy had a 280Z.”

If you’re like me, you probably wish you still had one of them today.

Classic cars often come with mechanical challenges, but some have earned a reputation for reliability. For enthusiasts who would rather spend more time driving than repairing, here are 13 dependable classics worth considering, according to American Collectors Insurance.

1991–1998 Toyota Land Cruiser

The Series 80 Land Cruiser is legendary for its durability. It may not be fast, but with proper maintenance, it can seemingly run forever.

Volkswagen Beetle and Super Beetle

The air-cooled Beetle requires regular maintenance, but its simple design makes it easy and affordable to repair. Parts and mechanical advice remain widely available.

1965–1993 Ford Mustang

From the original Mustang to the Fox-body models, parts are plentiful and repairs are generally straightforward. Even the early-1990s four-cylinder LX models are economical and dependable.

1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee

The XJ Cherokee had some electrical and interior problems, but its basic construction and drivetrain are remarkably tough. It also enjoys tremendous aftermarket support.

1984–1991 BMW 3 Series

The E30 BMW is relatively simple, enjoyable to drive and supported by a strong supply of replacement parts. Most of its original problems have long since been identified and corrected.

1976–1985 Mercedes Sedans (W123)

The W123 Mercedes was one of the most over-engineered automobiles ever built. Properly maintained diesel models are known to travel several hundred thousand miles.

Porsche 911SC and Carrera 3.2

The 1978–1989 Porsche 911SC and Carrera 3.2 feature durable engines, rust-protected bodies and relatively simple electronics. Repairs can be expensive, so buy the best example you can afford.

1994–1996 Chevrolet Impala SS

Sharing many components with Chevrolet’s police and taxi models, the Impala SS is powerful, comfortable and affordable to service. Its Corvette-derived LT1 engine adds plenty of performance.

1984–2013 Chevrolet Corvette

The C4, C5 and C6 Corvettes combine sports-car performance with surprising reliability. Many have surpassed 100,000 miles with relatively few serious problems.

Saab Classic 900, 1978–1993

The Saab 900 offers excellent seats, distinctive styling and easier servicing than many front-wheel-drive automobiles. Well-maintained examples commonly reach 300,000 miles.

Volvo P1800

The P1800 earned worldwide attention when one example traveled more than 3 million miles. Its durability, attractive styling and rare ES wagon version make it highly collectible.

Datsun 280Z

The 280Z combined European-inspired styling with dependable Japanese engineering. It remains durable, enjoyable to drive and supported by a large aftermarket.

1967–1976 Plymouth Valiant

Powered by Chrysler’s dependable Slant Six or small-block V-8, the Valiant is simple, affordable and easy to repair. It can remain an original cruiser or become a powerful sleeper.

No classic car is completely trouble-free, but these models offer a strong combination of durability, available parts and knowledgeable owner communities. A careful inspection and good maintenance records are still essential before making a purchase.
