How Low Can Fuel Go?
I just stopped and filled up my wife’s Ford Expedition which has a 25 gallon fuel tank. I was driving to Murfreesboro to help someone and looked down and the has gauge was on empty. I quickly search Gas Buddy and searched fuel prices. I was near the Murphy Fuel Station at the corner of Memorial Boulevard and Northfield Boulevard it stated $1.37. I cannot remember seeing fuel this low than maybe on the late 90s. My wife Felicia doesn’t drive much and I thought, “this fill up will last her 3 months.”
Yesterday my assistant Marvin who lives in Franklin drove to Smyrna to shop for groceries and fill up his tank. I asked if it was worth the drive, he said it was since gas was $2.09 in Franklin, Tennessee. He said groceries are a little less in Rutherford County.
Last year at this time, according to the to Chattanooga Times Free Press Chattanooga gas prices were $2.24 a gallon on Sunday — their lowest average level in nearly two months, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 170 local stations.
But the cheapest gas in Tennessee — and the sixth lowest of any city in the United States — is in Cleveland, Tennessee, GasBuddy surveys show. Cleveland’s average of only $2.14 a gallon Sunday was a dime a gallon cheaper than nearby Chattanooga and averaged 55 cents a gallon below the U.S. average price Sunday of $2.69 a gallon for regular gas, GasBuddy.com said.
The Overton County News reports as of today April 28,2020 that “Tennessee’s gas price average continues to decline and has dropped nearly 4 cents since this time last week. The Tennessee gas price average is now $1.56, which is 25 cents less than one month ago and nearly $1.07 less than one year ago.
“Tennessee motorists continue to see steady declines at the pump,” said Megan Cooper, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “If the state average drops below $1.50 motorists will be seeing the cheapest prices in 12 years.”
Tennessee gas prices have declined for 61 consecutive days for a total discount of nearly 68 cents per gallon. The lowest 10% of pump prices are $1.26 for regular unleaded. The highest 10% of pump prices are $1.97 for regular unleaded.
As gas prices continue to push cheaper across the country, only one dozen states carry an average of $2/gallon or more. Monday’s national average is $1.77, which is 4 cents less than last week, 28 cents cheaper than last month, and $1.11 less than a year ago.
Let’s hope gas prices will stay this low during the Summer vacation season, especially if we drive that Ford Expedition that get 11.8 miles per gallon..
