The Unwanted Refund: How Country Star John Rich Helped a Tennessee Farmer Defeat the IRS
Having experienced it up close, I know how easily news outlets lean into sensationalism, outrage and use emotion just to drive profit. The days of Walter Cronkite and ‘and that’s the way it is’ are sadly gone. It’s easy to become cynical, but looking back, the truth is that journalists still get the story right far more often than not. Ironically, even my MTSU TV news professor a few years ago during one of my elections once told me, ‘Sparks, what the media is doing to you is unethical.’ I looked right back at him and said, ‘Now you know why I’m in your class—to learn how counter the false narratives.'”
Here’s a great story of how the media can make a positive difference—which is what they should be doing. For 76-year-old Tennessee farmer Wilson Kirby, all he ever wanted was to do the right thing. Instead, doing the right thing triggered a multi-year bureaucratic nightmare with the IRS—one that nearly cost him his farm. Now, following widespread media attention and an unexpected assist from country music icon John Rich, Kirby is finally on the verge of total relief.
The $20,000 Bureaucratic Mistake
The ordeal began back in 2022 when the IRS accidentally sent Kirby a $20,000 tax refund. Knowing the money wasn’t his, Kirby attempted to return it immediately. But rather than taking the money back gracefully, the agency turned the situation into an administrative disaster:
Interest Penalties: The IRS charged Kirby over $4,000 in interest on the very funds he was trying to give back.
Withheld Funds: The agency confiscated his entire legitimate tax refund the following year.
Property Seizure Warnings: As the dispute dragged on, threats were made to seize his farm to satisfy the “debt.”
Through it all, Kirby stood firm.
My tax lady didn’t do nothing wrong,” Kirby insisted. “The IRS made the mistake, and they should have to pay for it. Not me.”
An Unexpected Ally Steps In
After the story first aired on local news, it caught the eye of singer-songwriter John Rich (half of the hit country duo Big & Rich).
Rich, who was named by President Trump as the USDA Special Envoy for U.S. Landowners and sworn in by Ben Carson in the Oval Office on July 10, was appointed to help property owners combat government overreach, activist campaigns, and threats to private property rights. Seeing the injustice faced by a local farmer fell squarely within his new mission.
I saw the story you did on Mr. Kirby,” Rich said. “I’m now working with The White House to protect American landowners, and this falls under my scope of work. I think I can get this fixed…”
Rich took immediate action, taking the issue straight to top leadership in Washington, D.C. He then personally called Kirby to deliver the long-awaited good news—calling all the way from overseas.
He said, ‘Feel relieved, I called the head man in Washington D.C. over at the IRS and got him working on it,'” Kirby recalled. “I said, ‘Will you call me?’ He said, ‘I’m overseas right now, but I will call you Monday and let you know what happens.'”
I’m Just Trying to Do What’s Right”
The sudden wave of national attention left the humble farmer feeling a bit overwhelmed, as friends and neighbors flooded him with calls.
“I couldn’t believe it myself… country music singer, big shot,” Kirby laughed. “Everybody keeps calling me saying, ‘Oh, you’re a movie star, you’re a big deal.’ I’m not trying to be a movie star. I’m trying to do what’s right. God knows I’ve tried to do what’s right.”
The ordeal has taken a heavy emotional toll on the 76-year-old, but the intervention from Rich and the media brought an overwhelming sense of relief.
Feels like a load off me… I’ve had a heck of a time,” Kirby said. “I ain’t trying to beat nobody. I’m just trying to do the right thing.”
Waiting on the Final Paperwork
Following direct communications between Kirby’s accountant and IRS representatives, Kirby learned that the long-standing case is finally settled.
Yet, like any wise farmer who has dealt with government red tape, Kirby maintains a healthy dose of practical skepticism: he says he won’t celebrate completely until that official confirmation letter is sitting in his mailbox.
