TDOT to Repair Winter-Damaged I-24 Pavement in Rutherford County
Lane closures scheduled Wednesday for pothole repairs; full resurfacing planned for spring
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will conduct emergency lane closures on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County on Wednesday to address severe pothole damage caused by recent winter weather.
“I want to thank TDOT’s hardworking staff for their efforts to keep our highways safe during the lane closures and delays on I-24 in Rutherford County during road milling,” said Rep. Mike Sparks.
Winter weather takes a toll—creating potholes and rough pavement across the state. As repair crews get to work, I’m asking Tennesseans to be patient with delays, drive courteously through work zones, and above all, watch out for the safety of our road workers.”
Wednesday’s Work Schedule

On February 4, from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m., crews will close eastbound lanes on I-24 between mile markers 67 and 68, just east of Sam Ridley Parkway.
Two lanes will be closed at a time in sequence:
∙ First: the on-ramp and two outside lanes (closest to the shoulder)
∙ Then: the two inside lanes
What Crews Will Do
Workers will mill the damaged pavement—removing the top layer to eliminate potholes and create a temporary grooved surface. Crews will also sweep the roadway and shoulders to clear loose gravel. This temporary fix will improve driving conditions until permanent resurfacing can be completed this spring.
Permanent Solution Coming
The affected stretch of I-24, from the Davidson County line to Baker Road (near mile marker 71), is included in TDOT’s 3-Year Pavement Plan for full resurfacing in 2026. The contract was awarded in December, but work cannot begin until Tennessee experiences warmer temperatures and asphalt plants fully reopen.
All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
Safety Reminders
Drivers traveling through the work zone should:
∙ Allow extra travel time
∙ Slow down when approaching construction areas
∙ Move over for workers and equipment
Tennessee’s Move Over Law, passed in 2006, requires drivers to move over or slow down for stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles. Violators face up to 30 days in jail and fines up to $500.
