Remembering Smyrna’s Harold Galyon: A Life of Faith, Service, and Quiet Encouragement

Smyrna has lost one of its finest. Harold Houston Galyon, 88, passed away peacefully at home on July 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy built not on fanfare or headlines, but on the steady, faithful example he set every single day.

For close to twenty-three years, Harold served as our accountant. Over those many years of working together, I came to know him as far more than a man who understood numbers. Harold was the kind of person who walked into a room and made it lighter. He always had an encouraging demeanor — a word of hope, a patient ear, a calm reassurance that things would work out. He was thoughtful of others in a way that felt genuine and never forced. That was simply who Harold was. Felicia and I have thought extremely highly of both Harold and Joy for as long as we have known them, and that esteem has only deepened in these difficult days.
Harold’s beloved wife, Joy McCarter Galyon, has been a fixture of community life in Smyrna for many years through her involvement with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. For many residents, Joy’s beautiful smile was the welcoming sight that greeted them at the reception desk at Smyrna Town Hall — especially for folks who were new to Smyrna and looking for information about our town. She made our community feel like home from the very first hello. Together, Harold and Joy embodied what makes Smyrna the place we love: people of warmth, integrity, and quiet dedication to others.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Family
Harold was born in Seymour, Tennessee, to Oscar Ellis and Flora Belle Taylor Galyon. Born and reared on a farm as the youngest of nine children, he earned the nickname “Shorty” — a name that carried with it the affection of a large and close-knit family. He graduated from Sevier County High School in 1957 and went on to attend Carson-Newman, where he played football and, more importantly, met the love of his life, Joy. Their marriage of 65 years stands as a testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love.

Harold built a fulfilling career as an auditor for Tennessee Farmers Co-op. After retiring from the Co-op, he spent 25 years as a CPA, filing tax returns and managing finances for friends and local businesses. It was in this chapter of his life that so many in our community came to know and rely on him — not just for his professional expertise, but for the trust and kindness he brought to every interaction.

Most importantly his faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of everything Harold did. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Smyrna/LifePoint Church, where he proudly served for many years as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, trustee, and treasurer. He lived out his faith not in grand gestures but in the daily example he set — in his church, his work, his family, and his friendships. He found peace and joy in God’s creation, especially sitting on the beach, listening to the ocean.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Flora Galyon; his brothers, Kenneth, W.A., and Darrell; and his sisters, Esta Rogers, Eula Hatcher, Ruby Blalock, Marjorie Johnson, and Louise DeLozier. He is survived by his loving spouse of 65 years, Joy McCarter Galyon; his children, Jana Leslie (Steve) and Bradley (Stacy); four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Community Gives Thanks
When I think of Harold, I think of Proverbs 27:17 — “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Harold sharpened everyone around him. He made us better — not by correcting or critiquing, but by encouraging, by listening, by being present. He was a man who lived his faith quietly and consistently, and his example will be remembered by many in Smyrna for years to come.

Felicia and I join so many others in lifting up prayers for Joy, their daughter Jana and her husband Steve, their son Bradley and his wife Stacy, and the entire Galyon family. May the Lord surround them with His peace and comfort in the days ahead, and may they be reminded of how deeply Harold was loved by the community he served so faithfully.
Service Information
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held Sunday, July 26, at LifePoint Church in Smyrna, with visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and the service following.
Interment will be held Monday, July 27, at 3:00 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery, 2304 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville. All who love him are welcome to attend and share their favorite memories.
