Stewarts Creek High School Band to Perform at Presidential Inauguration
SMYRNA, Tenn. — The Stewarts Creek High School Band has been selected to perform at the 60th presidential inauguration, marking the most prestigious invitation in the program’s history. The 160-member band will represent Tennessee on the national stage at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration parade on January 20.
“We had so many students that were bouncing off the walls and just excited for the opportunity and the honor,” said band director Michael Chester. “Our parents, school board, and administration share in this excitement.”
The band’s selection came after a rigorous application process, supported by key political figures and community leaders. State Representative Mike Sparks acknowledged the crucial role of various advocates in securing this opportunity. “I want to personally thank Brittany Montgomery, who’s the field representative for Senator Bill Hagerty, and other leaders who helped advocate for the school band to play at the inauguration,” Sparks said during a recent WGNS radio appearance. He also suggested the band consider performing “Amazing Grace,” noting its status as Tennessee’s official state hymn.
Since its establishment in 2013, the Stewarts Creek band program has built an impressive performance history, “Here at Stewarts Creek, we always strive for excellence and we ask our kids to do their very best,” said band director Debbie Burton. “We know that this band is special, and it’s just really exciting that we’re going to be able to showcase our students on the national stage.”

The invitation brings both honor and challenges. The band is working to raise $120,000 to cover trip expenses, with only five weeks to prepare. “To ask them to raise this money in a short amount of time is a daunting task. It’s huge,” Burton explained. “We really need businesses and individuals to come together and help support our students in this endeavor.”
Despite the fundraising challenge, Chester emphasizes the historic significance of the opportunity. “It’s an amazing opportunity for these students to be a part of history and to serve our nation,” he said.
