Highway Horror: Deadly Pattern of Unsolved Shootings Terrorizes Tennessee I-24 Corridor

If you see something—say something!

Two Fatal Shootings on Same Highway Exit Raise Safety Concerns
A troubling pattern has emerged along a stretch of Interstate 24 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, where two fatal shootings have occurred within two months near the same exit.
The first incident happened in May when a man was discovered shot inside his vehicle at the Waldron Road exit. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.

The second shooting occurred this past weekend when a 22-year-old Noah of Smyrna was found shot and killed on I-24, again near the Waldron Road exit. This case also remains unsolved with no arrests or identified suspects.
Police Investigators Search for Connections
While authorities have not officially linked the two incidents, the proximity and timing have raised questions about whether these shootings are connected. Investigators are exploring multiple theories, including road rage incidents and random targeting, but have not reached any conclusions.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking public assistance, asking anyone with information, tips, or dash cam footage from either incident to come forward.
Community Concerns Mount

I travel down that section of I-24 almost daily and worry about not only the often wreck-less driving, but highway shootings as well. The problem isn’t just local—but becoming increasingly common nationwide. What makes these incidents particularly unsettling for drivers is the seeming randomness and the limited ability to protect oneself while driving.

Changing Driving Behaviors
The threat of highway violence has prompted many drivers to modify their behavior behind the wheel. Aggressive driving responses like honking or gesturing at other drivers now carry perceived risks, as these confrontations can escalate quickly when firearms are involved.
I would argue what’s most concerning are cases where victims have done nothing to provoke an attack, yet became targets simply because another driver perceived some slight or offense. This unpredictability makes highway shootings particularly frightening for the general public.
As investigations continue, the community waits for answers while remaining vigilant on the roads they travel daily.
If you have any dash cam video of the car traveling on that route Saturday morning, or if you have any information about the shooting, you’re asked to call call Burnett at 615-904-3052, Detective Stephen Lewis at 615-904-3055, or the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office at 615-898-7770. Anonymous tips may also be called in to Rutherford County Crime Stoppers at 615-893-7867.
