State Representative Mike Sparks’ (R-Smyrna) son, Preston, was a member of Vanderbilt University’s first coding boot camp graduates. The innovative boot camp is giving Middle Tennesseans an opportunity to learn a growing and valuable skill that could potentially lead to a job in the tech industry.

The 24-week computer coding camp is an innovative partnership between Vanderbilt University and Trilogy Education Services. According to Vanderbilt University, students learned front-end and back-end technologies, such as HTML5 and JavaScript, while also benefiting from a wide set of career services like resume support and technical interview preparation.

“I’m excited to see Preston and these other students graduate and want to thank Vanderbilt for providing this educational opportunity here in Middle Tennessee,”‘ said Representative Sparks.

(Editor’s Note: The staff at Tennessee Ledger believe coding is vitally important to the education of our young students. Learning computer coding has become a foundation skill that will be needed in the future. The teaching of digital literacy in the classroom and a basic knowledge of coding language will only benefit the next generation of students and help enable them to land those high tech jobs. Congratulations Preston Sparks and the other Vanderbilt students on a great accomplishment.)
