With our beautiful natural environment here in East Tennessee, many of us have had plenty of opportunity to engage in outdoor activities this summer. With beautiful mountains to hike, beautiful lakes to swim and boat in, and the multitude of parks to play recreational sports and engage in leisure activities, most of us have experienced at least some of the damaging effects of our southern summer sun.

“The sun’s heat dries your skin of natural oil’s, and it’s UV radiation damages and can cause long term changes to your skin’s structure,” says Elizabeth of Advanced Weight Loss and Wellness. “Photoaging, or premature aging due to sun exposure, causing damage to the collagen and elastin in the deep skin layer called the dermis. This leads to wrinkles and fine lines. UV light also accelerated the production of melanin, causing what we call ‘age spots’.Exposure to the sun can also cause damage on a cellular level, progressing the normal effects of aging, and in a more severe level, cancer. Exposure to UV Radiation has been linked to the three main categories of skin cancer: basal and squamous cell carcinomas or melanoma.

“Of course, preventing the damage in the first place is best. Wear a broad spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen, like our Glo Skin Beauty medically based sunscreen and reapply frequently, wear long sleeves and broad rimmed hat, and seek shade. After the damage is done, there are solutions for restoring your skin to its healthy, youthful glow. Collagen supplements help improve skin, hair and nail healthy, but also improves any of your connective tissue, including tendons, ligaments and the lining of your digestive system. A good medically based skin care line will include cleansers, moisturizers, creams, lotions and serums which contain medical ingredients that help restore your skin. Lastly, nutritional supplements help provide your body with nourishment to help repair cells. For more information, go to
