For those who may not know Dan Miller he is the author of the New York Times best-selling book, 48 Days To The Work You Love, No More Dreaded Mondays and Wisdom Meets Passion.
When I first met Dan it was around 1996 or 97. We were both changing into our Gi’s while taking a Taekwondo class at Christ Church on Old Hickory Blvd in Nashville. He introduced himself to me, “Hi, I’m Dan Miller.” I said, “Oh, you’re the Dan Miller on the radio.” He looked very surprised and asked, “So you listen to the show.” I said, “Every Sunday night before I go to work at Nissan on the night shift.” Dana and his lovely wife Joanne had a radio show on SuperTalk 99.7 FM called, Career Link with Dan and Joanne Miller.”
During the classes that were offered once each week, I would often pick Dan’s brain on what good books to read or any other advice that would help me further my knowledge of leaving Nissan and starting my own business.
Dan and Joanne’s mission, according to their 48Days website, ” to foster the process of imagining, dreaming and introspection, to help people find their calling and true path, and to translate that into meaningful, purposeful and profitable daily work… all within 48 Days!”
Dan encourages others to look inwardly first and finding or creating work you love based on your personality style; your values, dreams and passions – and your skills.
I had told Dan that I was selling cars on the internet. I had just sold a red Jaguar XJS Roadster convertible. I had purchased it from a local car dealer who owned it a year and was having a tough time trying to sell it. I knew he wasn’t doing a good job of marketing the car. At that time we only had the Wheels and Deals magazine that was only distributed in middle Tennessee.
To my knowledge and others, that Jaguar was the first car to be sold online in our state. I had also sold a 1974 Porsche 911 to a buyer form Coast Rica and a few other classic cars. When I told Dan that I wanted to start my own business and leave the auto assembly plant job he stated, “You need to follow your passion and start your car own business.” Dan was the first to encourage me to leave the company. It took me a few years and I left to start my auto business, MidTn Autos.com, which was the fist auto business with a domain name in our state. Dan has also written my book forewords, “Learn the Car Business for Fun and Profit, Learn To Barter and my latest, How to Do More with Less During Tough Times.
If you’re like I was in my late 20s and early 30s and you don’t like your job I would encourage you to seek Dan’s advice and find a few mentors in the field you are wanting to go into. I consider Dan a mentor and as a state lawmaker her in Tennessee representing the 49th house district that is one of the issues that I often advocate for. Last year my colleagues and I passed house resolution 0054, General Assembly, Statement of Intent or Position – Encourages schools, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based organizations to increase opportunities for mentorships and apprenticeships for students.
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
